Best Golf Courses in Florida

Golf Course Lingo

Whether you plan to tee off at one of the Best Golf Courses in Florida or upon your hometown course, you can talk like one of the pros. Read onward to learn some of the most common expressions golfers use, and enjoy ‘talking the talk’ as you ‘walk the walk.’ When you encounter other golfers on the course, you may hear some of the following terms and/or expressions: :

    • Par – This is the allotted stroke count for each hole. Due to the varying degrees of difficulty throughout a course, pars can vary greatly.

    • Links – You may be curious to learn that this term is not one that makes much sense initially. First used to depict a course that is found near an ocean, ‘links’ now means any course at all, for instance: “He went out to play the links.”

    • Airmail – Send a shot far over an object, and you have committed airmail.

    • Approach shot – Hit a shot from the fairway to the green, and you will have successfully executed the approach shot.

    • Angle of Approach – Golf is not dissimilar to the game of pool. Both take angles into account throughout much of the game, and the angle of approach in this case depicts the angle of a club as it is going to affect the ball’s trajectory.

    • Army Golf – Have your play described as ‘army,’ and you will no doubt have a high score on your scorecard. It denotes hitting back and forth over the green, trying in vain to land the ball in the hole.

    • Albatross – This term is used rarely, mainly because it is a difficult feat to complete. An albatross is a score that is 3 under par.
